John 6:28-29 Then they said to Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them: "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Isn’t that amazing? This is actually the same question people ask till this very day: "What shall we do to do the works of God, or what shall we do to fulfill the works of God," simply put, Jesus was asked to say what we must be busy with, in order to do the will of God. Notice how we just like the people who spoke to Jesus always want the emphasis to fall on what we should do, what work God wants us to do.
The Greek word ἔργον (ergon) means: 'your works, your labour, your deeds, your actions, your behaviour, you’re doing in order to accomplish and complete the purpose.'
Now let’s be honest, the question that Jesus was asked was the golden opportunity to hear from Him what exactly it was and is what GOD WANTED US TO DO, and here is what He said: "to believe in Him whom He sent."
Thats it.
Thats our work.
Thats what we must do.
If we believe in the Son being sent by God, we would be busy with the works of God, doing/working His will!
Our faith in Jesus will be our work, our labour, our deeds, our actions, our behaviour, our doings, everything! Through faith in Him, we will be busy with what God accomplishes and complete in us for His purpose!
Just a little further into the same conversation, Jesus even said that the very will of God, was that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life (Joh 6:40)! So, the will of God for us is to believe in Christ and have eternal life!
Sadly, many many people to this day do not know the will of God. They still think His will is to do this and that for Him, placing the emphasis on what we must do, our works instead of beholding the work of the Son.
And that’s why Jesus' answer to our lifelong question about what our works for God should be like is so amazing: “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."
Are you busy with the work of God and His will?
Praise the Lord that we get to always be busy with the will of God, working endlessly through believing in the Son, Jesus Christ, so that all our labour, deeds, actions, behaviour, yes all, points with gratitude to what He has accomplished and completed in us for the purpose He was sent, so that we may have eternal life in Him and live through Him to the glory of the Father.
Amen
