Psalm 63:1 A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. Oh God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You, in a dry and thirsty land, where there is no water.
How did you wake up this morning? Because David woke up while still hiding in the wilderness of Judah with one desire: to expect the Lord. Not the outcome, but the Lord.
So although David was physically in the desert when he wrote this Psalm, we all, just like him, also experience "desert moments," times in which we feel forsaken and lonely, and everything around us appears dry and barren.
Yet David reminded us that as another day in the wilderness started, he longed for the Lord, not supplies nor strategy, just the Lord Himself.
Although most of us might wake up each morning longing for the outcome or provision for our circumstances, David reminded us to long for the Lord, for oftentimes we are inclined to long for what we know the Lord can do for us or around us instead of longing for Him!
"My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You" David wrote.
Wow. David's real need was not something from the Lord, but the Lord Himself!
This longing reminds me of Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well in Samaria when He said, "But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst, but the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14).
It also reminded me of His words to the crowd days later: "I am the Bread of life; he who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst (John 6:35)."
As we all sometimes find ourselves in wilderness situations, those dry and barren moments, let us not just seek the outcome but long for Jesus.
May He be our desire, so that, like David, we get to feed on Him and declare the same as Psalm 63:8 says: "My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.”
Amen
