John 21:20-22 Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” So Peter, upon seeing him, said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!"
Shortly after Jesus' resurrection and appearance unto the disciples, there was that time Peter told them that he was going fishing, so most of the rest went with him, according to John Chapter 21. But as you probably know, they were once again unsuccessful the whole evening, caught nothing, and then Jesus appeared on the shore early the next morning. After He asked them if they caught anything, He instructed them to throw the net on the other side, which allowed a miraculous catch, which later was followed by a conversation between Jesus and Peter after breakfast, during which Jesus asked Peter 3 times if he loved Him.
After each time Jesus asked Peter this question, He gave Peter specific instructions: Feed my lambs, shepherd my sheep, and feed my sheep. Shortly after these words during their discussion, we read that Peter turned around and saw John, the beloved disciple, following him and Jesus as they talked. Now we all, just like Peter, are prone to look at other disciples and consider them more worthy of the call we were called to by the Lord. It's as if Peter asked Jesus, "Lord, what about John?" What are Your plans for him? Because he is much more worthy and better and closer to You, and he loves You, are You sure You want me to feed Your lambs and take care of Your sheep and feed them? Yet Jesus’ reminder to Peter is a clear reminder to all who follow Christ: What does it have to do with us how the Lord wants to use other disciples? We should simply follow Him and do what we are called to do.
May these few verses of Jesus' and Peter's conversation also remind you, like it reminded me, to fix our gaze upon Christ and to always treasure our call to follow Him, beholding how important our call to follow Jesus is, instead of thinking that other disciples are more capable and loving and worthy and up for the task and calling we were called to.
So, remember Jesus' words: You follow Me!"
Amen
