John 4:10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Most of us know the story of Jesus and the woman at the well in Samaria all too well, but may I turn your attention to these words of Jesus unto her for just a second?
“If you knew the gift of God.” Wow. Do you know the gift of God?
I mean come on, we get to KNOW thé gift of God, who is Jesus!
Sadly, there are people who don’t know the gift of God, because they think the gift of God is something, not Someone!
Now put yourself in that lady's sandals that day at the well - she just heard about God's gift and then she heard that God's gift will also give unto anyone who asks living water!
Off course she wasn’t going to be puzzled over what Jesus meant by “living water" cause she would have immediately thought of Jeremiah who prophesied twice that God is the “fountain of living water."
The thing that would have puzzled her though, was that this Man at the well offered the gift of God and living water for anyone who asks!
Not deserve, nor earn, just ask!
Unless we understand and know what God offers us in Christ, we will never ask for it. To know who Jesus is, is to understand the gift of God.
Jesus is God's gift unto us, His not just a mere wish at the well. God knew we needed a Savior, a Deliverer, a Redeemer, a Healer, and a True Friend, and yet Lord.
Nothing else and nobody else will give us such water, such life, only Christ.
The wells of this world will always have us come back for more, more money, more pleasure, a better educator, a better political leader, a better economist and better entertainment, yet only the gift of God, Christ, truly quenches our thirst, giving us the living water that springs up to eternal life.
Amen
