Psalm 4:7-8 Many are saying, “Who will show us anything good?” Lift up the light of Your face upon us, LORD! You have put joy in my heart. More than when their grain and new wine are abundant. In peace I will both lie down and sleep. For You alone, LORD, have me dwell in safety.
This question David penned down years ago is still among the main news headlines worldwide today: "Who will show us anything good?"
Oh, and do we get to answer this question with certainty as David did? For as we behold Christ, we get to see who not just showed us anything good but gave us His absolute goodness, as He gave His son Christ Jesus.
Now back in the day when David wrote this Psalm, the majority of the people pointed to God's goodness when their grain fields did well during harvest and their vineyards budded nicely, yet David reminded us of whom and from where real goodness and blessing comes from that keep us safe and that is only from the Lord.
For when the world's negativity, ungodliness and misery are all around you, and the harvests and vineyards don't do so well, the goodness of the Lord is our safety, for through whom God is, we still have real joy in our hearts to live with and to live from.
You see, David testified that there is no greater joy than to be safe in the light of the Lord's face shining over us day in and day out.
In Christ, we have the privilege to wake up every day and go to bed each nighn with our Father's light shining over us, safe in His goodness, despite the things we tend to cling to for our safety and see as proof that there is still good.
So, when you get asked, "Who will show us anything good?", may your answer be like David's, "God can, and God did."
Even more than what David said, Christians get to be living, breathing, walking, talking witnesses of God's goodness towards mankind in Christ, as we get to bear the fruit of the Spirit which also testifies of His goodness which is in us!
How blessed aren't we to also display the goodness of God's Kingdom, for the kingdom of God is not food and drink (like the abundance of a grain harvest and new wine,) but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Rom 14:16-17).
Worldly people know that abundant harvests and vineyards and fortresses do not fill the heart, nor bring peace, nor promise safety, but still raises the question: "Who will show us any good?"
The answer to joy, peace and safety lies in God's goodness which He gave unto us in His Son, Christ Jesus.
